Well, I just finished the 3 book series. I know I'm a bit late on reading these, but now I know why some of the radical christian community was way against this series, though they didn't like the Harry Potter series either. Some people can't just leave a book just be a book for entertainment's sake.
Anyway, I liked it. I think it would be wonderful to have a demon, someone always connected with you, to comfort you when alone or sad and to give advice. I bet mine would be some sort of cat.
I also like how Lyra changes from a lying, spoilt brat to someone who thinks of others feelings and knows how to keep secrets and not to brag about things. Her so-called father was no true parent of any kind at all, only wanting someone for his experiments. And, then there's her crazy fanatic mother who thinks she's a pet to show off to her rich friends. What Mrs. Colter is doing to the kids is terrible! Though, as the series progresses, I think, in some twisted way, she does really care for Lyra.
I'm also glad that the dead have the right to leave and reunite with their friends or demons and become part of everything. That's how it should be.
I was hoping, in the end, that they might find some way for Lyra and Will to be together and the angel said that they could learn to travel the worlds without the knife. Maybe, they managed that somehow.
I listened to the cassette version from NLS and the lady reading it did a rather good job with the accents and all. Its rare enough we get a good reader from NLS, but to get one that can do accents other than her native British, is really rare.
Oh, in case people are wondering...I do believe in god or higher power, but I also feel that lots of mainstream churches have stupid rules and they should learn that a book is written to give information, entertainsment, or historical facts. We have free will and no one should tell us what to think or believe or read.
The full cast audio version of the books is much better. My demon would be either a cat or a dog. Have you seen The Golden Compass movie?
film is crap, full cast audio version is absolutely brilliant IMHO - in part read by the author him self
The film sucked! Haven't heard the full-cast audio. Didn't know there was one, have to find it.
You can find them on Audible.com. Philip Pullman does the actual narration parts while the cast reads the dialogue. Wish more audiobook companies would try that. Haven't seen the film and don't necessarily plan to.
i love that series, read them once in a while depending
I'm still on the first book but it is definitely interesting.
